These paintings are mostly autobiographical in that the series began at the time I was leaving a place I was really fond of and mostly reflect a search (still ongoing!) for stability within a new context. Animals and birds, as always, invade and express feelings. I am relatively new to painting and use collage often. I paint on my pottery trays, printing tin and wood. I am not familiar with canvas.

I think they are more assemblages and they are things I have stumbled across, and enjoy for their shapes or patina, and quite often history. It always takes time to put an assemblage together – I sometimes have looked at the objects for a year or even 5 years when something will suddenly occur.

: 4 : Intervals need practice

In the late nineties I had an exhibition called “Words Words Words”. I asked all invited artists to include words in their work and someone asked me what I was doing so I started this series and I have never stopped! It is so free! Fantasy, reality, humour, sadness, anything at night.

They are often derived from scenes I have witnessed, conversations I have had, such as “I dream a potato” and a friend of mine said “last night I dreamed a dream” and I replied “what do you expect to dream – a potato?”.

The During the Night prints are sold with a mount, and are priced at £12.00. There are over 80 in the whole series of prints. Postcard books are available for £5 (11 postcards).

Strange dreams fascinate our imagination, some place psychological understanding first, whilst others see the humour in its entire splendour. During the Night is a series of little sketches by Veronica Gosling, creating a dreamworld of unique unorthodox cliché, oxymorons and paradoxical ideas.
